Honduras continues its efforts to protect its national flower, the Rhyncholaelia Digbyana orchid, through the orchidarium in Yoro. This region is one of the last natural habitats for this iconic species.
The orchidarium, established by the National Program for Sustainable Rural and Urban Development (PRONADERS) at the National Institute for Forest Conservation and Development (ICF), focuses on active orchid conservation. This includes in vitro reproduction, environmental education, and scientific research.
This initiative addresses biodiversity loss, as the orchid faces threats from deforestation, agriculture, and illegal trade. The orchidarium aims to educate schools and communities about the importance of this national symbol, securing its future in Honduras. The ICF is also working to combat forest pests using drones and other advanced equipment, demonstrating a commitment to preserving Honduras' natural resources in 2025.
