The Harrogate Autumn Flower Show, held at Newby Hall and Gardens from September 19 to 21, 2025, attracted an estimated 30,000 visitors eager to see an impressive display of oversized produce.
Organized by the North of England Horticultural Society (NEHS), a charity established in 1911 to promote horticulture in northern England, the event is a highlight of the gardening calendar. The giant vegetable competition was a major draw, with growers from across the region presenting their large-scale produce. Michael Wilson from Peterlee won with his pumpkin, which weighed 149.45 kg (329.5 lbs). Other notable entries included Andy Dawson's marrow at 66.70 kg (147.2 lbs), Chris Marriott's carrot weighing 9.53 kg (21 lbs), and John Simpson's cabbage that tipped the scales at 24.95 kg (55 lbs).
The show offered a comprehensive horticultural experience beyond the competitions, featuring live talks and demonstrations by gardening experts, and opportunities to purchase plants and supplies. The NEHS, which has been organizing flower shows since 1920, also supports various horticultural initiatives. This year's event included the National Onion Championship and the Northern Vegetable Society Championships.
The show also featured floral installations within Newby Hall, curated by floral designer Jonathan Moseley, adding an artistic element to the event. The Harrogate Autumn Flower Show continues to celebrate British growing, from the perfectly cultivated to the exceptionally large, drawing crowds and inspiring gardening enthusiasts.
