The Desertas Islands Natural Reserve, a part of the Madeira archipelago, is celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2025. The islands initially gained legal protection in 1990 when they were designated as a Special Protection Area.
Located approximately 25 kilometers southeast of Madeira, these islands are a sanctuary for several endangered species, most notably the Mediterranean monk seal. The establishment of the reserve has significantly contributed to the increase in the monk seal population, which has grown from about 6-8 individuals to around 30.
Visitors are welcome but require prior authorization and must adhere to the reserve's regulations. The islands also boast unique bird species and endemic flora, enhancing the region's rich biodiversity. Each year, the Desertas Islands host between four and five thousand visitors, highlighting the importance of balancing conservation with sustainable tourism.
