Danau Toba Geopark: Mass Tree Planting Initiative to Preserve Flora and Fauna

09:05, 05 June

Edited by: Anulyazolotko Anulyazolotko

In Simalungun, Indonesia, a significant environmental initiative has been launched to protect the flora and fauna of the Danau Toba region. This effort involves a mass tree planting campaign across seven districts within the area.

The project is a collaborative effort, timed to coincide with World Environment Day on June 5th. The primary goal is to support the UNESCO Global Geopark status of the area, which is due for revalidation.

The planting took place across 16 geosite locations, with 250 productive tree saplings planted at each site. The trees planted include fruit-bearing varieties like mango and rambutan, aimed at improving the local environment and economy. The initiative aims to boost the area's appeal and ensure the preservation of its natural resources.

The UNESCO revalidation process is scheduled for July 20-25, 2025, where the management of the geopark will be assessed. The authorities are optimistic about the success of the initiative and the preservation of the area's unique geological and biological heritage.
