Waling-Waling Orchid Conservation Efforts in Davao City

15:43, 01 August

Edited by: Anulyazolotko Anulyazolotko

The Waling-Waling orchid (*Vanda sanderiana*), known as the "Queen of Philippine Flowers," is a species endemic to the Philippines, particularly thriving in the rainforests of Mindanao. This orchid is celebrated for its striking beauty and cultural significance, especially in Davao City, where it is a symbol of resilience and natural heritage.

Historically, the Waling-Waling adorned the treetops of Davao's rainforests, flourishing on the trunks of dipterocarp trees at elevations below 500 meters. However, over-collection and habitat destruction have led to its decline, making it rare in the wild. In response to this, the Floriculture Industry of Davao, Inc. (FIDI) has intensified efforts to boost the production and conservation of the Waling-Waling. FIDI is collaborating with the Davao City Government to establish a botanical garden dedicated to indigenous flora, aiming to promote sustainable conservation practices and restore public appreciation for native orchids and ornamental plants. This initiative aligns with the city's broader sustainability goals, promoting environmental awareness and responsible resource management. The Davao City government's support underscores the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in achieving common goals.

Additionally, FIDI is organizing a Floriculture and Agri-Trade Fair to showcase a diverse array of ornamental plants and host various competitions. This event serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of Davao, highlighting the city's commitment to preserving its natural heritage and promoting environmental awareness. The Waling-Waling, with its vibrant hues and delicate form, embodies the city's resilience and its capacity to flourish even amidst challenges. The project also aligns with the city's broader sustainability goals, promoting environmental awareness and responsible resource management. The Davao City government's support underscores the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in achieving common goals.

Through these concerted efforts, Davao City aims to re-establish itself as the nation's floriculture capital, ensuring that future generations can experience the beauty of the Waling-Waling and other native orchids. The city's dedication to the orchid reflects a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of all things, recognizing that the health of the environment is inextricably linked to the well-being of its people.
