Catalonia Launches Plan to Support Pollinators Amidst Declining Populations

Edited by: Anulyazolotko Anulyazolotko

The Generalitat de Catalunya has initiated the Intersectoral Plan for the Conservation of Pollinators (PIPOL) to combat the decline of wild pollinators.

A 2023 report revealed a widespread decline in pollinators in Catalonia, impacted by factors like pesticide use and climate change. Approximately 90% of wild plants and 75% of agricultural crops depend on insect pollination.

The PIPOL, developed between June 2023 and June 2024, involves various sectors. It focuses on citizen involvement, improved research, habitat protection, sustainable agricultural practices, pesticide reduction, and pollinator-friendly urban spaces.

The plan aims to implement 28 measures between 2025 and 2026. The Museum of Natural Sciences of Barcelona is actively participating in the plan's development.

The PIPOL aims to ensure ecological functionality and the stability of agricultural ecosystems in Catalonia. This initiative seeks to ensure environmental and economic sustainability in the region.
