The Ministry of Environment of Cambodia is working to designate Phnom Sampov and Phnom Banan in Battambang province as natural heritage sites. This initiative aims to preserve the ecological, historical, and cultural values of these areas for sustainable green tourism and scientific research.
Technical teams are conducting research and consultations to evaluate the significance of these limestone mountain areas. Recent surveys have confirmed the presence of several globally threatened species, adding to Cambodia's and the world's scientific records.
The sites also boast historical significance, including ancient Khmer city remnants and rare limestone formations. The area is known for its biodiversity and attracts visitors to observe the daily spectacle of millions of bats emerging from cave systems.
Recent discoveries include a new species of "sun snail" and three new global records of biodiversity. These findings support the proposal to designate Phnom Sampov and Phnom Banan as natural heritage sites.
