Pittachhara Forest: A Model for Community-Led Conservation in Bangladesh

11:17, 02 August

Edited by: Anulyazolotko Anulyazolotko

The Pittachhara Forest, a 23-acre protected area in Bangladesh's Chattogram Hill Tracts, has become a focal point for community-driven conservation efforts. Established as the first privately protected area in 2017, the forest has been restored through protection, assisted natural regeneration, and enrichment planting of local tree species. This initiative has led to the resurgence of biodiversity, supporting a variety of wildlife, including the Bengal slow loris and the northern pig-tailed macaque.

In response to environmental challenges such as deforestation and unpredictable rainfall, the Pittachhara Forest and Biodiversity Conservation Initiative implemented a rainwater harvesting strategy. By constructing artificial ponds to collect monsoon runoff, the initiative has ensured that streams remain moist during dry periods, supporting the ecosystem's resilience.

Community engagement has been central to the initiative's success. Workshops and educational programs have been organized to raise awareness about biodiversity conservation among local youth. These efforts aim to foster a sense of ownership and stewardship, promoting sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and the community.

The Pittachhara model demonstrates the effectiveness of combining nature-based solutions with active community participation. It highlights the potential for local communities to play a pivotal role in environmental conservation, offering valuable lessons for similar initiatives worldwide.
