A significant paleontological discovery has been made in Rajasthan, India, with the unearthing of the country's first phytosaur fossil. The find, estimated to be 201.4 million years old, dates back to the Early Jurassic period and was discovered by a team led by Professor V.S. Parihar from Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur.

The fossil was found in the village of Megha, Jaisalmer district. Phytosaurs, ancient semi-aquatic reptiles that resembled crocodiles, lived during the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic periods. Despite their appearance, they are not closely related to modern crocodiles. These formidable carnivores had elongated, tooth-filled jaws adapted for a piscivorous diet.

The unearthed fossil measures between 1.5 and 2 meters, representing a medium-sized phytosaur. Its discovery in the Lathi Formation of the Jaisalmer Basin is crucial, confirming the presence of rich aquatic life in the region during a time when it is now a desert. This finding is particularly noteworthy as phytosaurs are known to have survived the Permian-Triassic extinction event, showcasing their resilience.

The discovery also includes a fossilized egg, offering rare insights into the reproductive behaviors of these ancient creatures. Senior geologist Narayan Das Inkhia highlighted the potential of the Jaisalmer region as a burgeoning geotourism destination, given its existing geological heritage, including dinosaur footprints and fossilized trees. The excavation site has been secured with fencing to ensure its preservation for future research.

This paleontological treasure is expected to elevate Jaisalmer's profile globally, attracting researchers and enthusiasts. It underscores the deep connection between past and present life on Earth and the stories held within ancient geological formations.
