Recent Archaeological Discoveries at Szeged Castle Shed Light on Its Resilient History

05:50, 27 July

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

The recent archaeological excavations at Szeged Castle have unveiled significant historical findings, offering insights into the castle's enduring legacy. The excavation, initiated in early July 2025, focused on the southeastern corner tower, known as the "water bastion." This area revealed a curved structure with interconnected components, indicating a deliberate and coordinated construction process. The walls, featuring a widening base, suggest a design optimized for defense.

Historical records indicate that Szeged Castle was established in the mid-13th century, following the Mongol invasion. It served as a strategic military stronghold, witnessing various historical events, including the Ottoman-Habsburg conflicts. The castle's design included multiple towers and fortifications, reflecting its defensive significance during its active years.

Artifacts uncovered during the excavation include medieval ceramic fragments, floor tiles, and 19th-century clay pipes. These findings provide tangible connections to the past, offering glimpses into the daily lives of those who inhabited the castle. The ongoing research aims to further elucidate the construction dates and historical roles of the castle's structures, inviting both locals and visitors to engage with a pivotal aspect of the city's heritage.

The castle's story serves as a testament to resilience and adaptation, highlighting its role in the city's history and its enduring presence through periods of change.
