Burgos, Spain: 6th-Century Visigothic Sarcophagi Unearthed at Hermitage of Montes Claros de Ubierna in 2025

Edited by: Anna 🌎 Krasko

Archaeologists in Burgos, Spain, have continued excavations at the Hermitage of Montes Claros de Ubierna in 2025, following up on previous discoveries. The Hermitage is located in northern Spain.

The excavation site is a necropolis with a thousand years of burials. Researchers believe the hermitage may be built upon a Roman mausoleum. Evidence includes Roman-era flooring and funerary inscriptions. Two fragments of a Roman-era gravestone and a small Roman stone altar were found inside the hermitage, supporting the theory that the hermitage was built on a Roman-era building used for worship.

Further analysis, including isotope analysis and microscopy of the teeth, will help determine their diet and food preparation methods. Ancient DNA analysis will explore their origins and potential relationships. Comparative studies of finds spanning from the 3rd to the 13th centuries could provide valuable insights into the history of Ubierna.
