Ancient seashell fossils, dating back over 145 million years to the Jurassic period, have been discovered in Surat Thani, southern Thailand. The fossils were found in May 2025 at four sites in the Sin Pun subdistrict, Phrasaeng district.
The discovery was initially reported by a local resident, Somchit Klaiprasong, to government officials. Experts from the Surat Thani Geological and Natural History Fossil Museum and the Mineral Resources Regional Office 4 subsequently surveyed the area.
The fossils, ranging from 0.5 to 5 centimeters, were found in layers of limestone, mudstone, and sandstone. Experts identified at least five types of seashells, indicating an ancient coastal lagoon environment. The fossils belong to the Khlong Min Formation, dating back to the Jurassic period.
