Galindez Island, home to Ukraine's Vernadsky Research Base, sees a surge in subantarctic penguins. During the Antarctic spring and summer, nearly 6,000 penguins resided on the island. Scientists recorded almost 7,000 penguins on the island during the 2023/2024 season. Despite a slight decrease this season, the expansion continues as penguins colonize new nesting sites on Galindez. Biologist Zoia Shvydenko noted that in April, approximately 3,500 penguins were present, with only 100 remaining by May 10. Shvydenko explained that during marine expeditions, researchers frequently observe penguins in the ocean or on other islands. While small groups are common near the station, gatherings of thousands occur within a 10-15 km radius. She also highlighted the unique family raising three chicks, a rare occurrence for subantarctic penguins, who typically lay two eggs.
