Brazil Enhances Antarctic Climate Research with New 5G Network at Comandante Ferraz Station
Edited by: Uliana Soloveva
On March 16, 2026, the Brazilian Antarctic station "Comandante Ferraz" officially inaugurated its 5G network, marking a significant technological leap for polar research. This launch was strategically timed to coincide with Brazil's National Climate Change Awareness Day, highlighting the environmental focus of the upgrade. This development builds upon the 4G connectivity established in 2022 and was made possible through a collaborative tripartite agreement involving the telecommunications provider TIM Brasil, the Brazilian Navy, and various federal government ministries.
The newly installed infrastructure is designed to bolster the communication capabilities essential for ongoing national scientific endeavors. The station currently houses seventeen specialized laboratories where nineteen distinct environmental research projects are underway. These studies primarily focus on the dynamics of climate change, oceanic cycles, and the critical processes of water acidification. By utilizing 5G data transmission, all initiatives under the Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR) can now rapidly relay processed findings to research centers on the Brazilian mainland, significantly accelerating the pace of scientific analysis.
During 2025, the station served as a base for over 180 scientists working on projects funded by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), all of whom will now benefit from high-performance data transfer. The 5G signal is estimated to cover a radius of approximately 10 kilometers around the station, a feature that is vital for ensuring the safety of personnel operating in the harsh and unpredictable polar environment. This network deployment, which utilizes Nokia equipment, relies on a robust satellite backbone that integrates both Starlink's low-earth orbit constellation and Hispasat's geostationary satellites to maintain reliable connectivity in this remote region.
Federico de Siqueira, the Minister of Communications, noted that the integration of 5G technology effectively bridges the gap between telecommunications and science while reinforcing Brazil's sovereignty on the Antarctic continent. Supporting this sentiment, Marina Silva, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, emphasized Antarctica's role as a global regulator of thermal balance. She pointed out that the increased efficiency of scientific work facilitated by 5G will be instrumental in developing solutions for the ongoing climate crisis. The Comandante Ferraz station, situated on Waterloo Island (King George Island) within Admiralty Bay, was rebuilt and reopened on January 15, 2020, following a devastating fire in 2012.
The deployment of 5G at the station occurs amidst a period of intense climate advocacy within Brazil, following the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) held in Belém in November 2025. During that summit, international leaders discussed critical issues such as adaptation financing and the transition to clean energy. This technological advancement underscores the strategic priority the Brazilian government places on scientific research and technological sovereignty, utilizing cutting-edge communication solutions to address global ecological challenges from the front lines of the Antarctic.
