Conservation Efforts Enhance Ganga River Dolphin Population in Uttar Pradesh

05:26, 25 July

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

The Ganga River dolphin, an endangered species, has seen a positive trend in Uttar Pradesh due to concerted conservation initiatives. Recent surveys indicate a notable increase in their numbers, reflecting the success of these efforts.

In 2023, the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department, in collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and local communities, conducted a comprehensive census of the Gangetic dolphin population in the Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary. The results revealed a significant rise in the dolphin population, with the number increasing from 41 in 2020 to 50 in 2023. This growth is attributed to enhanced conservation measures and increased awareness among local communities.

To further protect these dolphins, the state government has implemented the "Dolphin Friends" program. This initiative involves local stakeholders, including boatmen, fishermen, and students, who monitor dolphin habitats and raise public awareness about the species' conservation. The program has been particularly active in districts like Varanasi and Ghazipur, known for their significant dolphin populations.

Additionally, the Uttar Pradesh government has declared the Gangetic dolphin as the state aquatic animal, underscoring its commitment to preserving this species. This designation aims to bolster conservation efforts and promote eco-tourism centered around dolphin habitats.

These collective efforts highlight the importance of community involvement and government support in the successful conservation of the Ganga River dolphin in Uttar Pradesh.
