Monarch Butterflies' Migration Captured in Stunning Photos

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

The Monarch butterfly migration is a breathtaking spectacle, and photographers dedicate years to capturing its essence. These images offer a glimpse into the lives of these incredible creatures.

Photographer Jaime Rojo, a National Geographic Explorer, has spent nearly two decades documenting the Monarchs' multigenerational journey across North America. He has witnessed their gatherings in the oyamel trees within the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Michoacán, Mexico.

Rojo's photographs, like the one showcasing Monarchs fluttering amongst the trees against a blue sky, evoke a sense of awe. The dedication required to capture such moments is immense, as highlighted by Alexa Keefe, managing photography editor.

Other photographers, like Michael Forsberg, spent extensive time observing their subjects to capture the perfect shot. Thomas Peschak dedicated 396 days to photograph the Amazon, demonstrating the commitment involved in wildlife photography.

These images, whether of Greenland seals or brown bears, represent years of familiarity with their subjects. They serve as a reminder of the wild wonders that exist and the ongoing efforts to protect them.
