Mella Shaw's award-winning installation, 'Sounding Line,' is on display at The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery and Museum from May 24, 2025, to January 18, 2026. This immersive ceramic exhibition explores the devastating impact of marine sound and sonar pollution on whale species.
The large-scale sculptural forms are inspired by whales' tiny inner-ear bones and made from a unique clay body using whale bone ash. Visitors can touch red marine ropes that vibrate with sonar pulses, reflecting how marine life experiences sound underwater. The exhibition aims to raise awareness about the dangers of ocean noise pollution, which can disrupt whale communication, navigation, and feeding.
Dundee's history as a major whaling port in the 19th century provides a fitting backdrop for 'Sounding Line,' inviting reflection on human impact on the environment. The exhibition is free and suitable for all ages.
