Pará's Turtle Guardians: A Testament to Nature's Resilience

04:51, 31 July

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

The shores of Pará are currently the stage for an inspiring conservation effort, particularly during the sea turtles' breeding season. The Pará government, through Ideflor-Bio, is actively reinforcing protective measures across strategic coastal areas. This commitment reflects a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of life and the importance of safeguarding these ancient mariners.

Pará serves as a crucial migratory route for several sea turtle species, including the green turtle, olive ridley turtle, and leatherback turtle. These creatures, navigating the vast oceans, are a testament to nature's enduring spirit. In July 2025, a significant step was taken: green turtle eggs were carefully relocated to a safer environment within the Algodoal-Maiandeua Environmental Protection Area. This proactive measure shields the eggs from both natural threats and human interference, ensuring the continuation of the turtles' lineage. The APA Algodoal-Maiandeua is a sanctuary, a place where life's delicate balance is actively preserved.

In late July 2025, an olive ridley turtle chose Praia do Farol Velho in Salinópolis as its nesting site, highlighting the necessity of strict vehicle access control on beaches during nesting periods. This event underscores the need for mindful interaction with the environment. The Quelônios do Pará Conservation Program, spearheaded by Ideflor-Bio, integrates the monitoring of sea turtles, aiming to protect the 24 identified turtle species within the state. Collaborations with various institutions are in place to ensure effective conservation strategies. These partnerships reflect a shared commitment to the well-being of these creatures and the health of the oceans.

These actions are essential for protecting the turtles' reproductive cycles and generating technical knowledge to improve conservation strategies. The government's dedication to sea turtle conservation is a vital component of the ecological balance of the oceans. Recent studies indicate that the green sea turtle population in the Atlantic has shown a positive trend due to conservation efforts, with an estimated annual growth rate in protected areas. Furthermore, the use of satellite tracking has revealed that these turtles can travel thousands of miles, emphasizing the global significance of local conservation initiatives. The efforts in Pará are not just about protecting turtles; they are about fostering a deeper connection with the natural world and recognizing our role in its preservation.
