Donkeys and Firefighters: A Collaborative Approach to Wildfire Prevention in Catalonia

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

In Catalonia, Spain, innovative methods are being employed to combat wildfires, with donkeys playing a significant role. This initiative, known as Ramats de Foc, involves the use of donkeys to graze on undergrowth in strategic forest areas, thereby reducing the fuel load that can lead to intense fires. The program, established in 2017, collaborates with local firefighters to manage these areas effectively. Grazing by livestock, such as donkeys, has been recognized as an effective strategy to decrease the intensity and spread of wildfires by reducing the amount of combustible vegetation. This approach aligns with a broader trend in Europe, where countries are increasingly adopting sustainable and ecological methods for fire prevention. Despite the positive impact, the initiative faces challenges, including a lack of sufficient resources for the shepherds who care for the donkeys. However, the integration of extensive livestock farming in fire prevention plans is considered a key strategy, with other regions in Spain implementing similar programs. The Ramats de Foc initiative serves as a compelling example of how collaboration can protect the environment and communities, while also providing a second chance for these animals.
