A digital twin of the ocean, developed by a team including a Marseille-based expert and supported by an NGO, is being showcased at the UN Ocean Conference in Nice. This innovative system uses satellite data and artificial intelligence to monitor various aspects of the marine environment.
The system allows scientists to track ocean currents, acidification, and temperature changes. It also monitors plastic pollution, Sargassum seaweed movement, and the migration patterns of whales and turtles. This data helps identify breeding grounds and predict the impact of climate change on marine life.
Alain Arnaud, director of the digital program for the NGO Mercator Ocean, spearheaded the creation of this digital ocean twin. The system is presented on large screens at the UN Ocean Conference, providing a visual representation of the ocean's complexities. This technology offers new possibilities for marine conservation efforts.
