Cyprus Sea Turtle Nesting Season 2025: Protection Efforts Intensify

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

The annual sea turtle nesting season is underway on Cyprus beaches, marking a crucial time for these endangered species. The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (DFMR) is emphasizing enhanced protection measures to safeguard nests and ensure the survival of future generations.

Cyprus is a vital nesting ground for the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and the green turtle (Chelonia mydas). These turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, typically between 80 to 100 per nest. The DFMR's comprehensive protection program, active since 1978, includes nest monitoring, predator protection using aluminum cages, and public awareness campaigns.

Despite these efforts, only about one in 1,000 hatchlings survives to adulthood, facing threats from natural predators and human activities. Key nesting areas like Lara-Toxeftra and Polis-Yialias are protected under national laws and the NATURA 2000 network. The Cyprus Marine Aquaculture Research Centre (CMARC) also provides rescue and first aid for injured sea turtles, contributing to their rehabilitation and eventual release back into the wild.
