Hilda, a 17-year-old mixed-breed dog, has found a loving new home following her participation in the "A Walk with the Old Ones of La Perla" event. This special initiative, held on October 4, 2025, brought together 33 volunteers who dedicated their day to the most senior canine residents at the La Perla Animal Welfare Center in Medellín, Colombia. The volunteers engaged in activities such as walking, offering treats, and playing with the dogs, providing them with companionship and affection.
The event highlighted the importance of caring for senior animals, who are often calm and well-mannered, making them excellent companions. Veterinarians and ethologists were present to assess the physical and emotional well-being of the animals. Hilda, despite her age, showed an active and engaged spirit.
The broader goal of the event was to raise public awareness about responsible pet adoption and the continuous need for care for companion animals. La Perla Animal Welfare Center, the largest in Colombia, currently shelters over 2,100 animals. In 2025, the center facilitated 1,349 adoptions, exceeding its annual target, though many animals still await permanent homes.
Senior pets often have the advantage of being house-trained with predictable personalities, which can ease their transition into a new home. While some may require specialized veterinary care due to age, their established nature often means less training is needed compared to younger animals. The La Perla center regularly organizes adoption events and maintains accessible communication channels to encourage public engagement in adopting animals in need. Hilda's story exemplifies the impact of compassion and commitment, demonstrating how a simple act of love can provide a senior animal with the gift of a family.
