San Diego's coast is finally free from the toxic algae bloom that has plagued marine life for months. Dolphins, whales, sea lions, and pelicans were affected by domoic acid poisoning, leading to sickness and disorientation.
SeaWorld's Rescue Center is currently caring for one pelican, which is expected to be released soon. The bird, which initially suffered seizures, is now recovering and enjoying a diet of smelt and herring. Approximately 120 other animals were rescued locally, with about half surviving.
The algae bloom, which occurs naturally, was unusually early and severe this year. Researchers report that water samples now show the bloom has subsided. SeaWorld rescued 69 sea lions, 51 pelicans, and six dolphins in San Diego alone, all showing symptoms of domoic acid poisoning.
The neurotoxin attacks the brain, sometimes leading to aggressive behavior. SeaWorld, a major marine animal rescue organization, operates 24/7 to help animals in need, having rescued over 42,000 animals to date. If you see an animal in distress, contact their Rescue team.
