Green Sea Turtle Rescued from Ghost Net off Quang Ngai Coast in 2025

14:25, 05 May

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

An endangered green sea turtle was rescued off the coast of Quang Ngai province after becoming entangled in a ghost net [10, 9]. The Ly Son Marine Protected Area's management board provided treatment for the injured turtle, which had injuries to both front flippers [2, 12].

Fisherman Ngo Van Minh discovered the distressed turtle struggling beneath the surface near Ly Son Island [2, 12]. Minh removed the net and contacted the rescue team after noticing the injuries [2, 12].

The turtle is a juvenile green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), weighing about 12 kilograms [4, 16]. It is listed as endangered [4, 16, 15]. The turtle is currently undergoing rehabilitation and will be released back into the ocean upon full recovery [4, 16].

The Danger of Ghost Nets

Ghost nets pose a significant threat to marine life [9, 10]. These abandoned fishing gears contribute to marine debris [9, 10]. They can entangle and harm various ocean creatures, including sea turtles, dolphins, and sharks [3, 10].

Initiatives are underway to address the problem of ghost nets, including efforts to locate and remove them from the ocean [3, 5]. These efforts are crucial for protecting marine ecosystems and preserving biodiversity [2, 3].
