Cape Town SPCA Wildlife Rescue: Saving Animals Amidst 2025 Tokai Fire Devastation

15:25, 29 April

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

Amidst the ongoing Tokai fire in Cape Town in April 2025, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA's Wildlife Unit is actively involved in rescuing and caring for animals injured or displaced by the blaze. SPCA inspectors are traversing the burnt areas, searching for wildlife affected by the fire.

The team is focused on treating burns and providing hydration to animals, with the primary goal of rescuing and rehabilitating survivors. Belinda Abraham, spokesperson for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, described the silence in the devastated landscapes as heartbreaking, noting the significant impact on slower-moving species such as tortoises, snakes, and nesting birds.

The SPCA has doubled its rescue efforts in the Silvermine area and is also searching for a missing dog named Holly. Additionally, they successfully rescued a porcupine in the Tokai forest, which had been driven into the open due to the smoke. The public can support the SPCA’s efforts by donating to fund search and rescue operations or calling 083 326 1604 if they find an injured animal.
