Volunteers Rally to Save Birds After Oil Spill in Black Sea

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

In mid-December, an oil spill in the Black Sea prompted a wave of volunteer efforts in Anapa, where locals and visitors came together to assist affected wildlife.

Tatyana Skorodumova, head of the animal rescue service 'Koshkispas', reported on the organized response, highlighting the various roles volunteers took on, from cleaning oil off beaches to rehabilitating affected birds.

Upon arrival, volunteers found established systems for accommodation, food, and protective gear. Many people from across the country sent supplies to support the efforts, including medical equipment for birds.

Despite the grim situation, with oil stains visible on the beaches and birds covered in sludge, the local atmosphere remained lively, with families enjoying the seaside.

Skorodumova noted the dangers of oil exposure for aquatic birds, which can ingest toxic substances while attempting to clean themselves. The oil can cause severe internal damage, leading to fatalities even after rescue efforts.

New rehabilitation centers are opening along the Black Sea coast to provide better care for affected birds, reducing the stress of transportation to distant facilities.

As volunteers continue their work, they remain hopeful for the recovery of both the wildlife and the environment.
