Bitcoin Core to Remove OP_RETURN Limit

Edited by: Yuliya Shumai

Bitcoin Core is set to release v30, which includes a controversial change: removing the 80-byte limit on the OP_RETURN field. This decision, initially proposed in May 2025, allows for embedding arbitrary data in Bitcoin transactions. (Source: Coindesk, The Block, Protos)

The proposal has sparked debate within the Bitcoin community. Proponents believe it will streamline data embedding. Critics, however, fear increased spam and a shift away from Bitcoin's financial focus.

As a result of the proposed change, the alternative Bitcoin client Bitcoin Knots has seen increased adoption. As of June 24, 2025, Bitcoin Knots nodes accounted for approximately 13% of reachable Bitcoin peers, up from 5% in April. (Source: Coindesk, The Block, Protos)
