Spar shoppers in Zug, Switzerland, can now purchase groceries with Bitcoin via the Lightning Network. This marks a step forward in cryptocurrency adoption for everyday transactions. The store's Bitcoin payments are live on BTC Mao, as announced by DFX Swiss on LinkedIn on April 17, 2025.

According to BTCmap data, there are currently over 1,000 stores and businesses accepting Bitcoin payments in Switzerland. This initiative allows customers to pay using a QR code at checkout. Rahim Taghizadegan, Director of the Bitcoin Association Switzerland, demonstrated the ease of using BTC at Spar in a LinkedIn post.

Spar operates over 13,900 stores across 48 countries, serving millions of daily shoppers. The adoption of Bitcoin payments in its Swiss stores could potentially lead to a wider rollout of cryptocurrency payments across its global network.
