Meta is reorganizing its Superintelligence Labs division into four specialized groups to accelerate AI research and the development of AI-powered products. This strategic move is the fourth restructuring within Meta's AI division in the past six months, reflecting the company's significant commitment to advancing artificial intelligence.
The newly formed units include the TBD Lab, which will focus on foundational models like Meta's Llama series. The Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) group will continue its work on long-term, fundamental AI research. A Products and Applied Research group will lead the integration of AI capabilities into Meta's consumer-facing products, and MSL Infra will provide essential infrastructure support for all AI initiatives.
This internal realignment follows substantial investments in AI infrastructure, most notably the planned construction of a 2-gigawatt data center in Louisiana, representing a $10 billion investment. This facility, slated to be Meta's largest globally, is expected to be operational by 2030 and will occupy a 2,250-acre site in Richland Parish. The development is projected to create over 1,500 jobs, including 500 direct positions and 1,000 indirect roles, and is supported by state legislation aimed at attracting capital investment in AI infrastructure.
To meet the immense energy demands of this facility, Entergy Louisiana is constructing three new gas-fired electricity plants. Despite this aggressive expansion and recruitment drive, which has seen Meta attract top AI talent with significant compensation packages, the company has temporarily paused hiring within its AI department. This pause is described as part of routine organizational planning to establish a robust structure for its burgeoning superintelligence efforts.
Meta's overarching goal is to develop advanced AI capabilities that can be seamlessly integrated into its popular platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, aiming to enhance user experiences and drive innovation.
