Google I/O 2025: Android XR Platform with Gemini AI Powers Smart Glasses

Edited by: Olga Sukhina

Google unveiled Android XR, a new extended reality platform, at its 2025 I/O developer conference. The platform integrates Gemini AI into wearable devices like smart glasses and headsets, marking an expansion of Gemini's capabilities beyond phones and cars.

The company showcased Android XR glasses, its first eyewear since 2023. Shahram Izadi emphasized the need for portable, quick access to information without a phone. These glasses include a camera, microphones, and speakers, connecting to Android devices. Gemini AI provides real-time information, language translation, and an optional in-lens display.

Google is partnering with eyewear brands like Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, aiming to make the devices more stylish. A developer platform is expected later this year. Samsung's Project Moohan headset will be among the first devices to utilize the Android XR platform. The goal is to provide contextual, hands-free support, enabling users to interact with apps without phones, while addressing privacy concerns.
