Google Gemini to Utilize User Data for AI Training Starting September 2025; Users Can Opt Out

Google is set to implement a significant update to its Gemini AI service beginning September 2, 2025. This update will allow the company to use a sample of user uploads, including files, pictures, and videos, for training its Gemini AI models and enhancing related products.

The policy shift includes a rebranding of the 'Gemini Apps Activity' setting to 'Keep Activity.' This new setting will be enabled by default for users aged 18 and over, meaning that unless users actively opt out, their data will be used for AI training. Google states this proactive approach aims to improve Gemini's accuracy and responsiveness by learning from real-world user interactions, as AI systems require vast datasets for effective training.

Google asserts that the data used for training is anonymized and not directly linked to personal accounts. However, users have clear options to manage their data preferences. To prevent data usage for training, users can navigate to the Gemini app's settings and disable the 'Keep Activity' option. The company also provides an option to delete past activity. It is noted that even after opting out or deleting data, a small portion may remain on Google's servers for up to 72 hours before permanent removal.

The renaming of the setting from 'Gemini Apps Activity' to 'Keep Activity' has drawn attention, with some suggesting the new name might be less transparent. For users seeking maximum privacy, Gemini's 'Temporary Chats' feature offers a similar function to incognito mode, as these conversations are not saved or used for training and are deleted after 72 hours. This update reflects the ongoing balance in the AI industry between technological advancement and user privacy, offering users control over their data's contribution to AI development.
