Elon Musk Criticizes Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill' for Increasing Deficit in 2025

Edited by: Olga Sukhina

Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and former advisor to the Trump administration, has publicly expressed his disappointment with President Trump's "big beautiful bill." Musk, who financially supported Trump's campaign, now describes the legislation as a "massive spending bill" that increases the federal deficit and undermines the work of his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

In a recent CBS interview aired in late May 2025, Musk stated that the bill includes both tax cuts and enhanced immigration enforcement. He voiced skepticism about whether a bill could be both "big" and "beautiful." These comments come as Musk reduces his political spending and focuses on his companies, Tesla and SpaceX.

Musk's criticism could influence Republicans seeking larger spending cuts. Senator Mike Lee reposted a story about Musk's interview, hinting at potential improvements to the bill. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the tax provisions within the bill could increase federal deficits by $3.8 trillion over the next decade.
