Alaska Airlines to Equip Entire Fleet with SpaceX Starlink High-Speed Wi-Fi by 2027

Edited by: Olga Sukhina

Alaska Airlines is set to significantly enhance its passenger experience by integrating SpaceX's Starlink high-speed internet across its entire fleet. The ambitious project is scheduled for completion by 2027, aiming to provide travelers with a robust internet connection comparable to ground-based services.

The rollout is slated to begin in 2026, with installations planned for a variety of aircraft, including Boeing 787s, Boeing 737s, and Embraer E175s. This strategic move follows the successful implementation of Starlink Wi-Fi by Hawaiian Airlines, a subsidiary of Alaska Air Group. Hawaiian Airlines pioneered Starlink adoption among major U.S. carriers, initially equipping its Airbus A321neo and subsequently its A330 fleet. This deployment has set a new benchmark for in-flight connectivity, delivering speeds up to 500 Mbps with latency below 99ms, a substantial improvement over traditional Wi-Fi systems.

Alaska Airlines' commitment to improving the passenger journey is further demonstrated by its new loyalty program, Atmos Rewards. Members of Atmos Rewards will receive complimentary access to the Starlink Wi-Fi service, reinforcing the airline's dedication to offering added value and a superior travel experience to its loyal customers. This benefit is enhanced by a partnership with T-Mobile, which will provide Atmos Rewards members, particularly T-Mobile customers who are also members, with a smooth and ad-free Wi-Fi login experience.

The adoption of Starlink by Alaska Airlines aligns it with a growing number of global airlines embracing advanced satellite-based in-flight connectivity solutions. Major carriers such as United Airlines, Air France, and Qatar Airways are also integrating Starlink, reflecting a broader industry trend towards prioritizing high-speed, dependable internet access for passengers. This technological advancement not only elevates the passenger experience but also positions airlines as innovators in a competitive market. Additionally, the lightweight and aerodynamic design of Starlink's antennas is expected to reduce aircraft drag, potentially leading to significant annual fuel savings.

This strategic initiative by Alaska Airlines underscores a commitment to innovation, customer satisfaction, and operational efficiency, aiming to redefine the future of air travel connectivity.
