Google Maps is enhancing its review system by deploying an AI model, powered by Gemini, to combat fake reviews and suspicious profile edits. The system identifies suspicious activities, such as businesses attempting to manipulate their profiles or users reviewing numerous businesses they likely haven't visited. Warnings will appear in the app when suspicious five-star reviews have been removed. Already available in the US, UK, and India, these features will be available worldwide starting in May 2025. Google will also re-analyze past reviews with AI to detect patterns retroactively and may temporarily disable new reviews to prevent abuse. In 2024, Google's AI algorithms blocked or removed over 240 million policy-violating reviews and restricted over 900,000 accounts for repeated policy violations.
