Trump Pauses TikTok Ban Amidst ByteDance Sale Negotiations, Legal Scrutiny Continues

14:21, 02 April

Edited by: Olga Sukhina

President Trump has temporarily suspended the U.S. ban on TikTok, which was initially implemented due to national security concerns. This pause aims to provide ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, additional time to finalize a sale of its U.S. operations. This decision follows ByteDance's failure to meet the original deadline for finding an American buyer. This move has sparked legal debate, with some experts questioning the legality of the pause, considering the existing law mandating the sale or ban. Several entities, including Oracle and a consortium led by Frank McCourt, have shown interest in acquiring TikTok's U.S. operations. Currently, TikTok continues to operate in the U.S., serving its large user base. The suspension is set to last for 75 days, expiring on April 5, 2025. Trump has indicated a willingness to consider extending the deadline if progress towards a sale is evident. The situation remains fluid, with potential implications for TikTok's future in the United States.
