Mercedes-Benz’s Historic Auction: W 196 R Set to Break Records

On February 1, 2025, a unique auction will take place at the Mercedes-Benz headquarters in Stuttgart, organized by RM Sotheby’s. This event will feature just one item: the legendary 1954 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Stromlinienwagen, chassis number 00009/54. Such a singular auction is rare in the collector's world, making this event particularly intriguing.

This iconic vehicle, driven by five-time Formula 1 champion Juan Manuel Fangio to victory at the 1955 Argentine Grand Prix, is the last remaining example of the Stromlinienwagen with covered wheels. Experts estimate its value at over €50 million, highlighting its historical significance and rarity.

The decision to auction solely this car raises questions, especially since it has been part of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum's collection for the past 59 years. Its return to Europe for sale may be a strategic move in the ongoing rivalry between Mercedes and Ferrari, both vying for the title of the most valuable car ever sold.

In May 2022, Mercedes set a record with the sale of a 1955 Mercedes SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé for $135 million, surpassing Ferrari's previous record. With Ferrari's recent attempts to reclaim the title falling short, this auction could further solidify Mercedes’ dominance in the high-end collector market.

If the W 196 R meets its expected price, it will not only break records but also position Mercedes-Benz at the top of the most valuable cars ever sold, further challenging Ferrari's legacy.
