New Model Focuses on Thriving in Later Life and Lifelong Learning

Edited by: Liliya Shabalina

A new model of care developed at the Universidad Autónoma de Tlaxcala emphasizes education and self-care to promote healthy aging. This approach challenges the traditional view that age-related illnesses are inevitable, highlighting the significant impact of lifestyle choices on longevity. The model distinguishes between adult education, focused on functional literacy, and education for older adults, which aims to develop capabilities for meaningful life projects. It draws on the concept of successful aging and the importance of self-care, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. This innovative model is built on five operational categories: autonomy, experience, horizontality, dialogue, and agency. These categories empower participants to take control of their own aging process. The program is implemented at the University for/with Older Adults, serving as a foundation for the Social Gerontology degree program.
