Tuchín, Colombia – The municipality of Tuchín in Córdoba is preparing to host the XXVI Feria del Sombrero Vueltiao in 2025, a three-day event celebrating the region's rich cultural and artisanal heritage. This fair will offer visitors an immersive experience into the ancestral weaving techniques of caña flecha, the plant used to create the iconic sombrero vueltiao. Recognized as a Cultural Symbol of the Nation since 2004, the sombrero vueltiao is a profound symbol of the Zenú people, showcasing intricate craftsmanship passed down through generations.
Adding to Tuchín's cultural prominence, the municipality has been included in the itinerary of the National Geographic Quest cruise for October 19, 2025. This inclusion provides an international platform for travelers to witness firsthand the meticulous process of crafting the sombrero vueltiao and to engage with the Zenú community. The cruise will also visit other significant Colombian locations along the Caribbean coast, including Cartagena, San Antero, and Santa Cruz de Lorica. The sombrero vueltiao's quality is determined by the number of fiber strips used, with finer hats like the 'Vientitres' (23 strips) or 'Vientisiete' (27 strips) requiring up to a month to complete, symbolizing resilience and cultural identity.
The XXVI Feria del Sombrero Vueltiao, held from January 3-5, 2025, saw significant success, attracting over 25,000 attendees and generating substantial economic activity, with local artisans reporting earnings of $275 million pesos. The fair not only highlights the artisanal legacy of the Zenú people but also solidifies Tuchín's position as a growing cultural and tourist destination for 2025, offering a genuine connection to Colombia's artistic soul and ancestral traditions.
