Izmir Symposium Champions Culture and Ecology for a Sustainable Mediterranean

Edited by: Irina Davgaleva

Izmir, Turkey – The "Sustainable Mediterranean: Culture and Ecological Transformation Izmir International Symposium" convened on September 4-5, 2025, at the Historical Gas Factory Culture Center. This two-day event brought together a diverse group of experts, officials, and cultural advocates to explore the crucial link between culture and ecology in fostering a sustainable future for the Mediterranean region.

The symposium, a key outcome of the "Cultivated Territories" project, highlighted the significant role of culture in addressing complex challenges. Professor Dr. Pınar Okyay emphasized this point, stating, "Culture thrives on diverse narratives while helping us discover common ground. Cultural diversity is intertwined with human rights and fundamental freedoms, ensuring no one is left behind." This sentiment underscored the event's dedication to inclusive and rights-based approaches.

Key participants included Juliette Bompoint, Director of the Izmir French Cultural Center, and Agnes Rampal, Vice Mayor of Nice and President of AVITEM, who shared valuable insights and experiences, fostering international collaboration. Discussions also delved into Izmir's unique historical and cultural significance within the Mediterranean context, examining coastal design and the spatial relationships of multicultural heritage and communities.

A significant development was the signing of the "Mediterranean Culture and Ecology Cities Manifesto." This declaration, endorsed by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay, signifies a unified commitment among Mediterranean cities to champion ecological transformation and cultivate a sustainable future through culture. This initiative aligns with the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) Committee on Culture's advocacy for culture to be recognized as the 18th Sustainable Development Goal by 2030.

The "Cultivated Territories" project has facilitated a journey of shared learning, with previous forums held in Nice, Vitrolles, and Corsica. The project's overarching goal is to drive regional transformation by prioritizing culture and ecology, enhancing Izmir's cultural diplomacy, and developing sustainable models for sectors such as tourism and environmental management.

The symposium also touched upon the broader Euro-Mediterranean dialogue, referencing initiatives like the "Mediterranean Capitals of Culture & Dialogue," which aims to celebrate diversity and foster mutual understanding across the region. Tirana and Alexandria were designated as the first capitals for 2025. All sessions were open to the public, encouraging community engagement and a shared vision for a resilient and culturally rich Mediterranean. The event served as a powerful reminder that cultural practices and heritage are vital components for addressing contemporary environmental challenges and building a more harmonious future.
