Dubai has formally unveiled the design for the Dubai Museum of Arts (DUMA), an ambitious project set to become a major cultural and architectural landmark on the world stage. This iconic structure is the creation of the internationally celebrated Japanese architect, Tadao Ando, renowned globally for his minimalist yet powerful designs. Developed by the prominent Al-Futtaim group, DUMA will be situated dramatically above the waters of the Dubai Creek, intended to reflect both the emirate’s profound historical heritage and its relentless, forward-looking vision for the future. The comprehensive plans were formally presented on October 25, 2025, during a high-profile event attended by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who holds the crucial roles of Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, as well as the esteemed Ruler of Dubai.
The architectural concept for DUMA, conceived by Pritzker Prize laureate Tadao Ando, draws heavily upon Dubai’s historical connection to the traditional pearl diving industry. This conceptual link is physically manifested in the building’s form, which cleverly evokes the image of a precious pearl nestled within a protective shell. This design choice serves as a profound visual tribute to the city’s rich maritime legacy and its origins. Ando’s signature aesthetic, characterized by stark minimalism, the masterful use of concrete, and a profound sense of harmony between the structure and its surrounding environment, promises to deliver a contemplative space. Spanning five distinct levels, the museum complex is designed as a comprehensive hub for cultural and educational activity, dramatically positioned above the water’s surface. The layout ensures maximum functionality and visitor experience. The first two floors are dedicated entirely to adaptive exhibition galleries, providing versatile, state-of-the-art spaces capable of hosting diverse collections, ranging from classical masterpieces to cutting-edge contemporary art exhibitions. Moving upward, the third level will feature a high-end restaurant and an exclusive VIP lounge, offering patrons elevated views of the city and premium amenities. Essential operational infrastructure, including technical and service facilities, will occupy the first and basement levels.
Beyond its exhibition spaces, DUMA is designed to foster deep community engagement.
