Selkirk Rex: How a Genetic Anomaly Became a Beloved Breed

The Selkirk Rex, a distinctive feline breed known for its unique, curled coat, owes its existence to a remarkable spontaneous genetic mutation. This pivotal event occurred in 1987 in the state of Montana, USA. The anomaly first manifested within a litter of ordinary domestic cats, where a single kitten, named Miss Depesto, displayed not only a wavy coat but also noticeably curly whiskers. This foundational kitten became the progenitor of the entire Selkirk Rex lineage.

American breeder Jeri Newman quickly recognized the significance of this mutation. She immediately began a targeted selective breeding program aimed at stabilizing and fixing the dominant gene responsible for the curl. Initially, the mutated cat was outcrossed with Persian individuals. Subsequently, Exotic and British cats were also incorporated into the breeding pool, which helped shape the physical characteristics of the modern Selkirk Rex. The breed's name is multifaceted: the suffix “Rex” signifies its inclusion in the group of breeds characterized by wavy or curly hair, while “Selkirk” is derived from the surname of the breeder's stepfather. Official recognition for the breed was granted in 1992.

Selkirk Rex cats are classified as medium to large in size. Mature males frequently surpass the 7 kg mark. Their physique is robust and muscular, supported by sturdy, stocky legs, often leading to comparisons with plush teddy bears. The coat texture is notably soft and plush, presenting in both long-haired and short-haired varieties. Crucially, the wavy texture extends beyond the body fur, affecting the whiskers and eyebrows. The degree of curliness observed can fluctuate significantly, influenced by factors such as the animal's age, gender, prevailing climate, and the current season.

Due to the early inclusion of Persian ancestors in the breeding program, there is a potential hereditary risk for polycystic kidney disease (PKD) within the breed. Nevertheless, when provided with appropriate care and nutrition, these resilient animals boast an impressive lifespan, typically exceeding 15 years and occasionally reaching an advanced age of 17 to 20 years.

Grooming requirements differ based on coat length. Owners of long-haired Selkirk Rex cats must exercise delicacy when brushing to prevent the formation of painful mats or tangles. Conversely, the short-haired variants are considerably less demanding in terms of routine maintenance. A fascinating genetic trait is the possibility of both curly-coated kittens (carrying the dominant curl gene) and straight-haired kittens being born within the same litter. These straight-haired siblings are specifically designated as “Selkirk Straights.”

Characteristically, Selkirk Rex cats possess a remarkably balanced and agreeable disposition. They are renowned for their affectionate nature, playful demeanor, and strong attachment to their human companions. Rather than being overly vocal, they typically express their contentment through quiet, gentle purring. The compelling combination of their unusual, eye-catching appearance and their tender, companionable temperament has firmly established the breed's status as a significant and successful achievement in the field of felinology.
