Cats have officially claimed the title of Russia's most beloved pet in 2025, surpassing dogs and other animals in popularity. A recent comprehensive study indicates that a significant 85% of Russian households now include at least one feline, reflecting a notable shift in national pet ownership trends.

The urban centers of Russia show a strong preference for cats, with Kazan leading the way. In Kazan, an impressive 94% of surveyed residents reported owning cats. Ekaterinburg followed with 89% cat ownership, and Tyumen recorded 88%. Krasnodar and Novosibirsk both registered 85% cat ownership, while Samara reported 84%. Even in the major cities of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, cat ownership remains high at 82%.

The appeal of specific breeds is also evident, with Maine Coons topping the list as the most sought-after purebred cats in 2025. Ragdolls, Persians, and Exotic Shorthairs also ranked highly among preferred breeds. This growing cat population is significantly boosting the market for feline-related products, with cat product sales now accounting for approximately 63% of all pet product sales, a substantial 201% increase from the previous year.

This surge underscores a broader trend of pet humanization, where animals are increasingly viewed as integral family members. Historically, cats have held a special place in Russian culture, valued for their practical role in rodent control and often seen as symbols of good fortune. This cultural affinity, combined with the practical advantages of cat ownership in urban environments, such as suitability for apartment living and lower maintenance compared to dogs, contributes to their widespread appeal.

The Russian Orthodox Church has historically held a positive view of cats, unlike some other European traditions, which has also played a role in fostering this enduring affection. The increasing popularity of pedigreed cats over the past decade further highlights a growing investment in the feline companionship experience. The Russian pet product market is projected for continued growth, with cat-related items forming a significant portion of this expansion, reflecting Russia's deep and evolving relationship with its feline friends.
