Genetic Study Sheds Light on Cat Purring Behavior

Edited by: Екатерина С.

Researchers at Kyoto University's Wildlife Research Center have investigated the genetic basis of cat vocalizations, focusing on purring and other behavioral traits. Their study analyzed 280 neutered mixed-breed cats, examining the androgen receptor (AR) gene, which plays a role in behaviors like aggression. The findings revealed that cats with a shorter variant of the AR gene tended to purr more frequently. Additionally, male cats with this variant were more vocal toward humans, while female cats exhibited increased aggression toward strangers. These results suggest a genetic foundation for feline communication and behavior, offering insights into the complex lives of domestic cats.
