Dog safety on hiking trails: recommendations

Edited by: Екатерина С.

Colorado is known for its pet-loving residents, who often bring their dogs on outdoor adventures. The state was ranked as the 6th most dog-obsessed in the U.S. in 2024.

However, recent events underscore the importance of dog safety on trails. Park County Search and Rescue responded to a dog rescue operation in June 2024. The dog was exhausted and unable to continue a backcountry hike.

The rescue team emphasized that dogs may not recognize their physical limits. Owners should monitor their pets closely. They advise hikers to assess their dog's fitness and consider an emergency evacuation plan.

As the weather warms, more people hike with their dogs. Remember that Search and Rescue teams primarily assist humans. Proper preparation and awareness can prevent many issues.

Research trail rules and terrain before you go. Not all trails are suitable for dogs. Ensure your dog is physically capable of handling the hike.

Check the weather forecast and prepare for changing conditions. Bring enough water to prevent heatstroke, dehydration, and hypothermia. Keep your dog on a leash unless it's safe to let them off-leash.

Taking these precautions ensures a safe and enjoyable hiking experience for you and your dog.
