Daytona Beach is considering opening a dog beach, encouraged by the success of the dog-friendly beach in Ormond Beach. Daytona Dog Beach, Inc., a local nonprofit, is working with Volusia County officials to create a dedicated dog beach in Daytona Beach.
The Volusia County Council officially made the Ormond Beach dog beach a permanent amenity on April 1, after an 18-month pilot program. In early May, the council decided to explore options for a dog beach in Daytona Beach. County staff are expected to present potential site options soon.
Daytona Dog Beach, Inc. has about 50 volunteers. Nanette McKeel Petrella, the organization's president, is assessing potential locations, considering factors like parking, accessibility, and nearby dog-friendly businesses.
