Giant Interactive Cat Welcomes Passengers at Hong Kong International Airport

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has unveiled a monumental installation serving as the centerpiece of its "A Moment to Purr" campaign. The sculpture features a colossal sleeping ginger cat, measuring eight meters in length and 3.5 meters in height. The campaign launched on April 3, 2026, and is scheduled to run until May 2, 2026.

Far from being a static figure, the art piece includes a dedicated digital kiosk that allows visitors to virtually "pet" or "feed" the animal, triggering real-time responses. The giant cat’s ears and tail move gently, mimicking a real feline, while the soft sound of purring can be heard at intervals.

Between April 5 and 8, 2026, coinciding with the Easter holidays, passengers were also able to collect personalized souvenirs in the form of instant photos taken with the giant cat.

According to airport officials, the feline theme was chosen because animals serve as a universal language, marking the first time such large-scale animal-themed art has been displayed in this format at HKIA. The campaign also indirectly highlights Hong Kong's "cat economy" phenomenon, which organizers of the Hong Kong Cat Expo 2025 estimate to be worth over HK$2.4 billion annually.

Employing the popular and soothing image of a cat within a major transport hub is a strategic move designed to create a positive first impression for travelers.
