Maru, the globally adored Scottish Fold cat famous for his uncanny ability to fit into any box, regardless of size, has passed away at the age of 18.
Born in Japan on May 24, 2007, Maru's online journey began in 2008 when his owner started sharing videos of his antics on YouTube. While initially modest, his popularity surged when a video of him squeezing into a small cardboard container went viral. This led to Maru being recognized by Guinness World Records in 2017 as the animal with the most video views on YouTube. By August 2014, his videos had accumulated over 260 million views, and his YouTube channel, Mugumogu, eventually surpassed 577 million views.
Maru's owners shared the sad news, explaining that he had been unwell in the weeks leading up to his death, experiencing a loss of appetite. After seeking veterinary care, he was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, a form of cancer. Despite efforts, his health rapidly declined.
The news of Maru's passing has prompted an outpouring of grief from fans worldwide. His unique charm and the simple joy he found in everyday things, like a cardboard box, resonated deeply, highlighting the profound impact animals can have. Maru's legacy is one of pure happiness, a gentle reminder of the simple wonders that can brighten our lives.
