Artificial Intelligence's Impact on Education: Global Perspectives and Initiatives

07:21, 30 July

Edited by: Vera Mo

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly influencing educational systems worldwide, offering both opportunities and challenges. UNESCO has been actively involved in guiding the integration of AI into education to ensure it aligns with ethical standards and promotes inclusive learning environments.

In September 2024, UNESCO launched the "Artificial Intelligence and the Futures of Learning" project, building upon the 2019 Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence. This initiative aims to address both human and technological dimensions related to AI in education, focusing on policy dialogue, guidance for generative AI, and AI competency frameworks for students and teachers. The project emphasizes the need for a human-centered approach to AI, ensuring it does not exacerbate existing inequalities and is accessible to all learners.

In May 2024, UNESCO organized a virtual ministerial meeting on Generative AI in education, gathering 25 ministers to discuss the urgent need for regulations on generative AI and the competencies required to harness its benefits. This meeting underscored the importance of establishing ethical guidelines and regulatory frameworks to govern the use of AI in educational settings.

Furthermore, UNESCO has developed AI competency frameworks for both students and teachers. These frameworks aim to equip educators and learners with the necessary skills to understand and responsibly use AI technologies. The frameworks are designed to be adaptable across various educational contexts, promoting critical thinking and ethical considerations in AI applications.

Despite these initiatives, challenges remain in ensuring equitable access to AI tools in education. Disparities in technological infrastructure, digital literacy, and policy support continue to affect the integration of AI in schools, particularly in developing regions. UNESCO continues to advocate for inclusive policies that bridge these gaps and promote the ethical use of AI in education.

As AI continues to evolve, UNESCO's efforts highlight the importance of a balanced approach that leverages AI's potential while safeguarding educational values and promoting human-centered learning experiences.
