Gascon Language Revival: Efforts and Events in 2025

Edited by: Anna 🌎 Krasko

The Gascon language, historically spoken from the Northern Basque Country to the Aran Valley, faces endangerment. Bruno Muret, inspired by his family's lost connection to the language, has dedicated himself to its revival. He created a grammatical guide to the coastal Gascon dialect, connecting with other speakers online due to limited daily use opportunities.

Despite a rich history, including being the language of royalty like Henry IV and Richard I, Gascon's decline resulted from the imposition of French over centuries. Today, approximately 250,000 speakers remain, with UNESCO classifying it as "Definitely endangered." Organizations like the Academia Gascona de Baiona-Adur, founded in 1926, and the Observatòri de las Culturas Gasconas are actively promoting the language.

Events like "La Passem!", a run promoting the Occitan language, also strengthens solidarity between Basques and Gascons. In 2025, La Passem! will cross the Tarn on May 23 and 24, aiming to promote the Occitan language and culture. The event will start from Saint-Sulpice and end in Albi, covering 230 km.
