Local Initiatives Bolster Wurkun and Jiba Languages in Taraba State

08:58, 14 July

Edited by: Vera Mo

In the heart of Taraba State, a concerted effort is underway to preserve the Wurkun and Jiba languages, reflecting a deep-seated commitment to local heritage. This initiative, spearheaded by retired Brigadier General Jeremiah Faransa in partnership with Izesan Limited, underscores the importance of community-driven projects in safeguarding cultural assets. The project's focus is on creating a digital learning platform, including curriculum-aligned modules and mobile applications, to engage younger generations. This endeavor is particularly significant given that many Nigerian languages are at risk of extinction. The National Librarian and UNESCO have also expressed support for revitalizing indigenous languages in Taraba State, emphasizing the need to preserve Nigeria's cultural heritage. The involvement of local leaders and the community is crucial for the project's success, ensuring that the platform resonates with the local context and values. The project also aligns with the broader goals of UNESCO's International Decade of Indigenous Languages, highlighting the global importance of linguistic diversity. The project's success hinges on community participation and the integration of local knowledge. This approach not only helps preserve the languages but also strengthens the community's identity and cultural pride. By focusing on local needs and involving the community, the Wurkun and Jiba language project serves as a model for other local initiatives across Nigeria.
